How to Steal an Election?
Will the GOP's campaign to deter new voters and discard Democratic ballots determine the next president? asks ROBERT F. KENNEDY JR. & GREG PALAST in the latest issue of Rolling Stones. "In state after state, Republican operatives — the party's elite commandos of bare-knuckle politics — are wielding new federal legislation to systematically disenfranchise Democrats. If this year's race is as close as the past two elections, the GOP's nationwide campaign could be large enough to determine the presidency in November. "I don't think the Democrats get it," says John Boyd, a voting-rights attorney in Albuquerque who has taken on...
What moved Powell?
Maureen Dowd has a great piece in the New York Times, "But what sent him (Powell) over the edge and made him realize he had to speak out was when he opened his New Yorker three weeks ago and saw a picture of a mother pressing her head against the gravestone of her son, a 20-year-old soldier who had been killed in Iraq. On the headstone were engraved his name, Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, his awards — the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star — and a crescent and a star to denote his Islamic faith. In a gratifying “have you...
9-11 Overreaction - British Spymaster
Former MI-5 agent Stella Rimington says, "She argues that we should “treat terrorism as a crime, and deal with it under the law – not as something extra, that you have to invent new rules to deal with.” She is opposed to ID cards, because she can’t see how they could be “a significant counter-terrorist measure”, and although she admits she’s “had more time to think about it since I left the service”, she says her attitude to civil liberties has always been liberal. The big change, she argues, has been not her position, but the politicisation of the issue....
A Lesson for McCain
Colin Powell more than endorsed Obama. He repudiated the bigotry that has come to dominate McCain's campaign. Sally Quinn writes in the Washington Post On Faith blog, "It is my belief that John McCain disqualified himself from being an effective leader of this country about a year ago when he was asked if he would vote for a Muslim candidate for president. McCain's reply: "I just have to say in all candor that since this nation was founded primarily on Christian principles, personally, I prefer someone who has a grounding in my faith." McCain recanted a few days later, saying...
Debates Matter - Obama Surged Post Debate
CBS did a poll with the same group of people before and after the debate. Results indicate that Obama gained 8 points on the basis of his debate performance. "In a poll taken just before the first presidential debate, the Obama-Biden ticket held a five point edge, with 48 percent of likely voters backing the Democratic ticket and 43 percent supporting the Republican ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin. Those 476 likely voters were re-interviewed for the new poll, and their responses suggest that the Democratic ticket has made gains since the initial survey: The Obama-Biden ticket now holds...
